Streptomycin resistance in a streptomycin-producing microorganism.

Cell-free extracts of Streptomyces bikiniensis contain an adenosine 5'-triphosphate-dependent kinase which inactivates streptomycin (Sm) and dihydrostreptomycin by phosphorylation. The products have been identified as streptomycin 6-phosphate and dihydrostreptomycin 6-phosphate. Activity was not present in logarithmic-phase cells, which were susceptible to 25 mug of Sm per ml. In stationary-pha...

STUDIES ON STREPTOMYCIN VI. : The Effect of Streptomycin on the Metabolism of Multiplying Bacteria.

In a previous study the authors (Henry et al., 1948) reported on some of the effects of streptomycin (SM) on the metabolism of resting cells of Staphylococcus aureus, BaciUus cereus, and Shigella sonnei. It was found that SM inhibited the oxidation of certain carbohydrates and carbohydrate intermediates by susceptible strains of these organisms, but had no inhibitory effect on resistant strains...

Enzymatic phosphorylation of streptomycin by extracts of streptomycin-producing strains of Streptomyces.

Extracts of post-exponential phase mycelia of Streptomyces bikiniensis ATCC 11062, and other streptomycin-producers, catalyze phosphorylation of streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin with adenosine-5'-triphosphate. The phosphate is esterified with an -OH group of the streptidine moiety. It is suggested that O-phosphoryl-streptomycin might serve as an intracellular precursor of extracellular stre...

Streptomycin-dependent exhibition of cytokine-inducing activity in streptomycin-dependent Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain 18b.

Peritoneal exudate cells of mice were stimulated with a streptomycin-dependent Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain, 18b. Gamma interferon production by natural killer cells depending on interleukin-12 and interleukin-18 was induced only in the presence of a high dose of streptomycin. This study suggested the requirement of active bacterial metabolism for this host response.

Streptomycin

ever, certain adjuvants, e.g. para-aminosalicylic acid, may delay the development of drug-resistance. Streptomycin is not absorbed from the alimentary tract and, therefore, it must always be given intramuscularly as well as directly, where possible, into the spaces which it is desired to render free from bacteria. The drug is excreted by the kidney. After intramuscular injection an adequate blo...
